The Executive Director of the Institute for Energy Security (IES), Nana Amoasi VII, has warned that Ghana may experience persistent power outages, known as ‘dumsor,’ for the next year.
This warning comes after John Abdulai Jinapor, Co-Chairman of the Transition Team sub-committee on Energy and Natural Resources, raised concerns about the critically low fuel stock, with only five hours of fuel supply remaining.
Jinapor criticized the outgoing administration for failing to secure sufficient fuel, leaving the incoming government vulnerable.
However, former Energy Minister Herbert Krapa countered that load shedding is usually caused by technical or emergency power generation issues, or poor management of the power sector.
He claimed that the previous government left sufficient fuel stocks, which can be verified by contacting the power plants directly.
In an interview on Morning Starr, Nana Amoasi VII countered the claims, stating that the country is likely to experience ‘dumsor’ for the next year due to the current fuel shortage.
He explained that while the previous government could have arranged for additional fuel procurement, the new administration must act swiftly to secure supplies.
Nana Amoasi VII said, “The previous administration must could have made arrangement for procurement for some additional fuel to be standby. However, we rather expect the new government to act swiftly and engage a supplier. It may take more than two weeks to get there but we must start because we don’t have even an hour to spare for dumsor.”
“Yes, it will happen in the next minute or tomorrow, I can understand but not every Ghanaian can understand. We know very well that we are not out of the wood and we may have to contend with dumsor for the next one year because to this point that we are doing the discussion, we are talking only about generation but there are problems in the transmission grid, there are problems in the distribution grid.”
