John Mahama’s outfit designer, Mathew Agambire, has revealed that he began planning the president’s inaugural attire two months prior to the 2024 election.
On January 7, 2025, when John Mahama and Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang were inaugurated as President and Vice President, Mahama’s outfit became a topic of discussion. He was seen in a well-crafted traditional outfit designed with “kente” and “adinkra” symbols.
In a one-on-one interview with Serwaa Amihere on GHOne TV, on Thursday, January 9, 2025, Agambire described his planning process.
“I started planning it two months before the election. It wasn’t something that required a huge budget, and you know fashion, for example, if you have a program next month, I’m sure you’ll start timing your outfit beforehand. Sometimes it could be canceled, and many other things could happen, but you’ll still go ahead and plan. And I feel like this was a national issue, not only national but the whole world was watching. So, if you want to do something that will stand out or speak to the occasion, it needed more time, so I decided,” he explained.
When asked if he was confident in John Mahama’s victory, Agambire responded:
“I don’t think that’s something difficult; I was not so sure, but the fact of the matter is that I just wanted to make something for him for the occasion. There were two candidates; either of them could win, so I decided to go with him because I felt he was the one who fit best with my idea.”
He further detailed how he obtained the president’s measurements and how the outfit reached him.
“The same way I get in touch with most of my high-profile clients, I created a brand targeting a certain caliber of people, but it’s not easy to get to them like that. So, I just took his picture, studied his body, and estimated his measurements. When I finished, I got in touch with someone close to him and said, ‘Can you deliver this to him? Maybe he will like it.’ It is the same approach I use to reach people I don’t have prior contact with,” he revealed.
