President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama has revealed that government is compiling all uncompleted health facilities across the country with the objective of fashioning out a programme to finish and operationalize them.
The president said healthcare was a priority for his new government, adding that every citizen at any part of the country deserved access to it at all times.
To achieve this, the president said he was prepared to see to the completion of the numerous health care projects at various stages of completion nationwide.
“We will prioritize healthcare, ensuring that every Ghanaian no matter their location or economic status has access to quality medical care.
“In this regard, we will compile an inventory of all uncompleted health facilities and prepare a plan and programme to complete and operationalize these,” he said at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service in Accra.
President Mahama hinted that his government will uncap the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) in order to expand access to health across the country.
“To improve access to all of our people, we will in the next budget uncap the National Health Insurance levy. This is important so that the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) can have sufficient funds to reimburse health service providers for the care that they provide to the public,” he explained.
The National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL) is a tax on goods and services in Ghana that funds the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). The NHIL is the largest source of revenue for the NHIS, accounting for over two-thirds of its total funds.
