Finance Minister Designate, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has denied reports claiming that the government intends to seek financial support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under his administration.
The allegations emerged following a statement attributed to Dr. Forson, suggesting that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government would pursue IMF assistance after his appointment by President John Dramani Mahama.
This sparked debate and raised questions about the direction of the new administration, particularly regarding the country’s financial strategy.
President Mahama, who was sworn into office on January 7, after defeating the ruling party candidate in December’s election, appointed the former Minority Leader in Parliament to serve as Finance Minister.
However, during the vetting process for the first three ministerial nominees on Monday, January 13, 2025, Dr. Forson addressed the allegations, calling the reports “inaccurate.”
He clarified that while the government may request additional financing from the IMF if necessary, no such plans are currently in place.
He said, “Mr. Chairman, inaccurate reportage, I did not say I’m going to request for additional financing from the IMF, inaccurate. What I said is we could request fro additional finances if the need arise.”
