Kofi Adams, the Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, has revealed his plans to address the challenges faced by retired footballers during his vetting session with the parliamentary committee on Thursday.
The lawmaker emphasized his commitment to encouraging all active sportsmen and sportswomen to contribute to a pension scheme, aimed at helping alleviate the financial hardships many athletes face once they retire from active competition.
“We will encourage active sportsmen to contribute to a pension scheme. If I am approved, we will come out with modalities to see what we can do for those who have retired”, Kofi Adams noted.
Addressing the financial and health-related struggles of former footballers, Adams called for a well-structured support system that would ensure the long-term well-being of athletes beyond their playing years.
The proposed pension scheme is designed to provide athletes with a crucial safety net, helping them transition smoothly into retirement without the stress of financial instability.
The Buem Member of Parliament Kofi Adams highlighted that this initiative goes beyond offering immediate relief as it is also about cultivating a culture of financial literacy and responsibility among athletes.
By encouraging them to save and invest during their competitive years, the scheme empowers athletes to take charge of their financial futures.
