Raid on Ofori-Atta’s residence was staged to evade justice – OSP

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has denied any involvement in the reported raid on the residence of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, stating that the incident was staged to discredit the institution and obstruct its investigations.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng dismissed claims that his office sanctioned the operation, labeling the reports as false and misleading. He revealed that intelligence gathered by the OSP suggested the alleged raid was orchestrated by unknown individuals to create public discontent against his office.

On Tuesday, February 11, 2025, reports surfaced that a group of armed men, some dressed in military and police uniforms, others in civilian clothing, stormed Ofori-Atta’s residence in Cantonments, Accra. Eyewitnesses claimed that the intruders forcefully entered the house and conducted a search without presenting a warrant.

At the time of the incident, Ofori-Atta was reportedly out of the country for a scheduled medical check-up at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, USA. Witnesses, including a lawyer, alleged that the intruders ignored information that neither Ofori-Atta nor his wife was present and proceeded to ransack the property.

The incident quickly sparked public outrage, with the former minister’s family accusing the OSP of orchestrating the raid. However, Agyebeng categorically denied any involvement.

Addressing the media, Agyebeng insisted that the OSP was not behind the purported raid and suggested that it was a deliberate attempt to undermine the credibility of his office.

“Our intelligence points us to state that the purported raid on Ofori-Atta’s residence was staged or, at best, an imposter action in an attempt to cause disfavor for the OSP and derail the investigation,” Agyebeng stated. “The OSP is never deterred by such occurrences, and the investigations will continue as prescribed by law.”

During the press briefing, Agyebeng also announced that Ken Ofori-Atta has been declared a wanted fugitive in connection with an ongoing investigation into financial matters related to his tenure as Finance Minister. He assured the public that his office remains committed to due process and will not be influenced by attempts to obstruct justice.

Ken Ofori-Atta, an investment banker by profession, served as Ghana’s Minister of Finance from 2017 to 2024 under President Nana Akufo-Addo. Before joining government, he co-founded Databank Group, a leading financial services firm in Ghana, and served as its executive chairman until 2012.

Ofori-Atta was relieved of his position as Finance Minister on February 14, 2024, following economic challenges during his tenure. His handling of Ghana’s financial affairs has since come under scrutiny, leading to the OSP’s investigation.
