President John Dramani Mahama has announced the establishment of a new constitutional review committee and urged all Ghanaians to participate in this process to refine Ghana’s constitutional framework and address the evolving national and global dynamics that impact the nation.
Speaking at the celebration of Ghana’s 68th independence anniversary at the Jubilee house, he acknowledged the continuous improvement of the constitution by the late President John Evans Atta Mills, who initiated a constitutional review process in 2010, leading to the establishment of the Constitutional Review Commission.
The subsequent administration under Nana Akufo-Addo also undertook efforts for constitutional review.
Despite these reforms, President Mahama pointed out that there are some flaws and loopholes in the constitution and have set up a new committee for reviews.
“However, like any enduring legal and political framework, it has flaws and loopholes”, adding that,
“I have constituted a new review committee to undertake a comprehensive and inclusive reassessment of our Constitution.”
He urged all Ghanaians to participate in this process by submitting their recommendations and memoranda to the committee.
“I therefore urge all Ghanaians to participate in this process by submitting their recommendations and memoranda to the committee. This is an opportunity to ensure that our constitutional framework truly reflects the collective aspirations of the Ghanaian people and serves as a robust instrument for national progress.”
The new review committee is expected to engage with various stakeholders and the public to gather input and ensure a comprehensive and inclusive reassessment of the Constitution.
