The Minister of Energy and Green Transition John Jinapor says the government has not made any decisions to sell Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) or Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), despite ongoing financial challenges.
Addressing the presidential press at the Jubilee house, he stressed that ECG and NEDCo will remain public assets.
“Let me reiterate without equivocation that we have not taken a decision to sell ECG or NEDCO,” He stated.
He highlighted the significant revenue shortfall faced by ECG, which is supposed to collect over 2 billion cedis but only manages to collect 1.5 billion cedis, leaving a monthly deficit of 500 million cedis.
“ECG is supposed to collect over 2 billion, they collect only 1.5 billion, leaving a shortage of 500 million cedis every month. That sums up to about 6 billion cedis per annum. That cannot continue,” he added.
Mr. Jinapor stressed the government’s commitment to addressing these financial challenges.
“Government must do something about it, and we are determined to do something about it.”
He revealed the government’s plan to partner with the private sector, which he believes is the right approach to tackle the issue.
“It will be done in a competitive, transparent process, giving priority to Ghanaian entrepreneurs and Ghanaian businesses. And we believe that that would help tame the situation”, he said.
The public is therefore urged to disregard misinformation regarding the alleged sale of the power distributors.
