Raid on Addison’s home: Nat’l Security Operatives allegedly stole GHC10k – Afenyo-Markin

Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has accused National Security operatives of allegedly stealing GHC10,000 and jewelry belonging to the wife of former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, during a controversial raid on his residence.

Addressing the media, Afenyo-Markin described the raid as part of a disturbing trend of state-sponsored intimidation against former appointees of the Nana Akufo-Addo administration. He alleged that the operation, led by Richard Jakpa, Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, took place in the early hours of March 19 at Dr. Addison’s Roman Ridge residence.

According to Afenyo-Markin, about 15 heavily armed operatives stormed the former Governor’s home around 5 a.m., forcibly entering the premises while claiming to be searching for a hidden vault containing money. Despite Dr. Addison’s denial of possessing any such vault, the operatives ransacked the property.

“At the end of their raid, they could not find anything. Unfortunately for the Governor, some GHC10,000 he had on his bed was missing. His wife’s earrings and necklaces were also gone. In other words, these operatives stole them,” Afenyo-Markin alleged.

He further questioned the conduct of the security operatives, particularly their decision to dismantle and seize the home’s CCTV monitor.

“If they were acting lawfully, why did they take away the CCTV monitor? Why dismantle it?” he asked.

The Minority Leader also pointed to a similar raid on former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta’s residence in February, where security personnel allegedly stormed his home without a warrant while he was out of the country for medical treatment. Afenyo-Markin noted that Parliament had been told the Ofori-Atta raid was unauthorized, yet Jakpa had now led another controversial operation, raising further concerns about abuse of power.

Afenyo-Markin urged President John Dramani Mahama to take immediate steps to end what he described as politically motivated attacks.

“Ghana is a mature democracy. We must do better. These actions undermine democracy and weaken investor confidence. If people see these things happening to former officials, it will lead to capital flight. Even ordinary citizens will not feel safe,” he warned.

He called on President Mahama to use his second term to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of all Ghanaians.

“Your Excellency, the Ghanaian people have given you a mandate to govern. Let it be said that when you had the opportunity, you changed things for the better,” he stated.

Afenyo-Markin revealed that he visited Dr. Addison and his family on the night of the raid and found them deeply shaken. However, he noted that the former Governor remained resilient despite the ordeal.

“To Dr. Addison’s dear wife, I say take it easy. God be with you and your family,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Minority has also condemned the recent arrest of Oketekyire Afifah Manson, describing it as another instance of excessive force by state security operatives.

“We strongly protest his arrest. Let’s enforce the laws with a human face,” Afenyo-Markin concluded.
