Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has disclosed that New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed full confidence in his leadership and urged the Minority caucus to remain focused on holding the Mahama administration accountable over the reported loss of more than $1.7 billion under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.
According to a statement issued by the Effutu Member of Parliament (MP) on his Facebook page, the two met earlier in the day at Bawumia’s private residence in Accra.
Afenyo-Markin claimed they discussed party matters and the Minority’s agenda ahead of an emergency sitting of Parliament convened by the Speaker, Alban Bagbin.
Dr Bawumia is said to have highlighted the loss, which is equivalent to 1.5 percent of Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product, arising from the operations of GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana under the programme.
This fugure, the Minority in a press conference noted had been confirmed in the International Monetary Fund’s Aureport.
He cautioned the Minority Leader against being diverted by attempts to shift public attention away from the matter.
The former Vice President called on the Minority, under Afenyo-Markin’s leadership, to utilise every parliamentary rule available to ensure the government is held fully accountable to Ghanaians. He also commended the caucus for its efforts so far on the issue.
Afenyo-Markin said he assured Bawumia that the Minority regards the matter as a national task it will pursue to the fullest extent of its ability, guided by the interests of the Ghanaian people.
He confirmed that the reported loss under GoldBod and the Bank of Ghana features prominently on the Minority’s agenda as Parliament reconvenes.
“We remain resolute in this commitment, and we will not relent until the Ghanaian people receive the answers they deserve,” Afenyo-Markin stated.
The emergency sitting is expected to provide the Minority with an immediate platform to press the government on the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and related accountability issues.
