The Ministry of Sports and Recreation, on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, engaged the leadership of the Ghana Swimming Association in a strategic meeting focused on preparations for the upcoming 2025 African Zone 2 Senior, Junior, and Masters Swimming Championships.

Ghana has been confirmed as the new host of the prestigious African Zone 2 Swimming Championships after Nigeria withdrew as the original hosts. Scheduled for October 3–5, 2025, the event will be held at the Borteyman Olympic Aquatic Centre and is expected to welcome over 150 swimmers from more than 18 countries across the Zone.

President of the Ghana Swimming Association, Mrs. Delphina Quaye, updated the Ministry on progress made so far, highlighting the formation of a Local Organising Committee (LOC) tasked with overseeing the planning and successful delivery of the event.

She also outlined the critical requirements for hosting a successful championship and formally appealed for the Ministry’s support specifically in securing access to the venue and ensuring the provision of key logistical resources.

Meanwhile, Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, praised the Ghana Swimming Association for its proactive leadership and reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to hosting major international events. He noted that securing the championship highlights the nation’s advancing sports infrastructure, growing capabilities, and unwavering dedication to excellence in sports development.

Kofi Adams expressed the Ministry’s willingness to waive the facility user fee for the event to ease the financial burden on organizers, on the condition that proper measures are implemented to ensure the facility is well-maintained before, during, and after the championship. He further assured the Local Organising Committee of the Ministry’s full support, including collaboration with the Ghana Police Service to ensure a secure and well-coordinated tournament.

The Minister also urged the Local Organising Committee to collaborate with key media partners to boost publicity and build excitement ahead of the championship. He further recommended engaging the Ghana Education Service to involve students in the event, aiming to inspire and nurture the next generation of swimmers.

The Honourable Minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to advancing swimming and aquatic sports in Ghana. He also revealed plans to further upgrade the Borteyman facility through strategic partnerships and the addition of new amenities, with the goal of establishing Ghana as a leading hub for aquatic sports in the region.

However , demonstrating his personal commitment to the success of the event, Kofi Adams made a donation of Five Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHS 5,000) to support the Local Organising Committee’s preparatory efforts.

The Ministry expressed its eagerness to partner with all stakeholders in delivering a world-class championship that celebrates Ghana’s renowned hospitality, vibrant culture, and commitment to sporting excellence.
