Kwasi Kwarteng, Spokesperson for Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team, has stated that some party delegates expressed dissatisfaction over the perceived preferential treatment given to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during a recent NPP event.
Speaking on GHTODAY on GHOne TV with Lily Mohammed, Kwarteng acknowledged that while Dr. Bawumia, as a former vice president and flagbearer, merits certain privileges, the level of attention given to him at the event was seen by many as excessive.
“Concerns have also come from certain contexts about how people feel that Dr. Bawumia was overly projected. To be very honest and fair to myself, I have to, first of all, acknowledge and admit that as a former vice president and, of course, as a former flag bearer of the party, he deserves certain courtesies, privileges, and respect, which may not necessarily be accorded to other hopefuls or aspirants,” he said.
Kwarteng emphasized that delegates felt uncomfortable with the optics created during the event, particularly when Dr. Bawumia was paraded around the stadium in a manner that suggested endorsement by the entire gathering.
“Beyond the speech that he gave, people felt that it was not very appropriate for him to have been taken around the whole stadium to wave at delegates. At some point, the camera tricks had to get delegates to stand up and wave back, creating a certain impression and atmosphere as though the whole delegates were endorsing him,” he added.
He stressed that, for the sake of party unity, such optics should be avoided, especially given Dr. Bawumia’s apparent intentions to contest future internal elections.
Kwarteng’s remarks follow the NPP’s 2025 Annual National Delegates Conference, held on Saturday, July 19, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra. The event brought together approximately 5,000 delegates from across the country.
The primary agenda of the conference was to review and adopt proposed amendments to the party’s constitution. A total of 56 proposed changes were tabled, out of which 54 were approved and two rejected.
These amendments stemmed from the recommendations of a nine-member committee established to review the findings of the Professor Mike Oquaye Report, which examined the party’s performance in the 2024 general elections.
