EOCO seizes Shatta Wale’s Lamborghini over links to US fraud case

EOCO has seized a Lamborghini belonging to dancehall artist Shatta Wale following a joint investigation with the FBI linking the vehicle to a convicted US fraudster.

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has impounded a luxury vehicle belonging to Ghanaian dancehall star, Shatta Wale, following a collaborative investigation with U.S. authorities.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 5, EOCO confirmed the seizure of a 2019 Lamborghini Urus from the musician’s Trassaco Valley residence in Accra.

The operation was conducted by EOCO’s Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit (SARU), acting on a 2023 request from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Justice.

The sleek Lamborghini, according to EOCO, is believed to be tied to proceeds of financial crimes committed by Nana Kwabena Amuah, a Ghanaian national currently serving a 7-year (86-month) sentence in the United States for multiple fraud-related offenses.

The vehicle is reportedly part of Amuah’s illicit assets earmarked for restitution totaling over \$4.7 million.

EOCO stated that while Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., was cooperative during the operation, he expressed concern about the potential damage to his public image.

According to the agency, he requested that the seizure be kept quiet to avoid backlash from fans, noting that the luxury vehicle is central to his celebrity persona.

In a rare concession, EOCO allowed the musician to voluntarily hand over the car, which is now in the agency’s custody.

“The car was seized from one Charles Nii Armah, aka Shatta Wale. The officers were professional and civil and the search and seizure occurred without incident,” the statement read.

EOCO noted that the FBI and the Justice Department are preparing a formal Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) request to have the vehicle repatriated to the United States as part of Amuah’s restitution to victims.

The anti-graft agency further revealed that Shatta Wale and a former senior official of Ghana’s National Signals Bureau (NSB) have been identified as persons of interest and will be invited to assist with further investigations.
