President John Dramani Mahama has held bilateral discussions with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9) in Yokohama, Japan.
The meeting was announced by President Mahama in a Facebook post after his engagement with the UN Secretary-General.
According to him, the talks centered on strengthening multilateral cooperation, accelerating progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Ghana’s economic rebound, and rising security threats in West Africa.

President Mahama welcomed the UN’s recognition of Ghana’s leadership role within ECOWAS and the African Union in addressing the Sahel crisis, stressing the importance of regional collaboration to safeguard stability.
He also reiterated Ghana’s firm commitment to multilateralism and called for deeper democratization of the UN system to enhance its effectiveness and global representation.
Highlighting Ghana’s economic progress, the President noted that ongoing debt restructuring efforts were on track to secure long-term stability.
“I reiterated Ghana’s unwavering support for multilateralism and the need to further democratise the UN to enhance its representativeness and effectiveness. I also shared updates on Ghana’s recovery—our debt restructuring is advancing to secure long-term stability—and expressed appreciation to UNDP for its sustained partnership.”
He further expressed appreciation to the UN Development Programme (UNDP) for its continuous partnership in Ghana’s recovery process.
