A violent clash between two rival youth groups at Akyem Segyimase near Kyebi in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region has left several people injured. A swift joint military and police operation has since restored calm to the area.
The disturbances, which began on Thursday, September 4 were reportedly sparked after a suspected drug addict from a local ghetto assaulted a resident over allegations of flirting with his girlfriend.
The victim allegedly mobilized some townsfolk in retaliation, escalating the fight into a free-for-all brawl between the ghetto youth and the town’s youth.
Eyewitnesses reported that some rioters carried guns and machetes, with sporadic gunshots heard during the confrontation.
The clashes dragged on for days, forcing many residents to flee their homes until Sunday, when security forces intervened.
Three suspects were arrested during the operation, while the alleged ringleader, known as “Okyeman Rasta,” is still on the run.
Assembly Member for Segyimase, Addo Ernest Addison, confirmed the incident, noting that the injured are receiving treatment at the Kyebi Government Hospital.
He added that police are preparing to arraign the arrested suspects before court.
