The National Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) Task Force, in collaboration with the Western Regional Security Council, Western Naval Command, and Nzema East Blue Water Guards, has stepped up its anti-galamsey operations along the River Ankobra in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.
The latest exercise, carried out on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, covered communities from Dwira Ashem through Dominase to Akango.
Government Communications Minister Felix Kwakye Ofosu, in an update on Friday, September 19, said the raids formed part of ongoing efforts to protect the Ankobra River from illegal mining activities destroying its ecosystem.

The joint task force conducted coordinated patrols on the river and its banks, dismantling makeshift structures, raiding galamsey sites, and clearing dredging platforms.
In the process, the team destroyed or seized:
- 20 makeshift structures
- 10 dredging platforms
- 20 chanfangs
- 4 motorbikes
- 15 pumping machines
- 2 solar panels
- 1 standing fan
- 1 television set
- 3 gas cylinders
Officials say the intensified operations, ongoing for the past three weeks, are part of a broader national campaign to eliminate galamsey activities along the Ankobra and restore the river to its natural state.
