Anti-corruption campaigner Vitus Azeem has urged the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the Attorney General’s Department to strengthen communication and collaboration amid growing public perceptions of tension between the two institutions.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Tuesday, October 21, Mr. Azeem said the confusion surrounding the Ofori-Atta case could have been avoided if there had been better coordination between the two bodies.
“There’s need for more cooperation and collaboration when it comes to these important matters. You see, the Ken Ofori-Atta case is something that is very sensitive and basically every Ghanaian has an interest in it,” Azeem said.
He noted that the lack of synergy between the institutions had fueled unnecessary public speculation.
“They should have been able to talk more, discuss these things, sort out their differences, and not put this out in the public domain. It’s very difficult for us to now understand, and people are giving various interpretations to the whole matter,” he added.
When asked whether the issue could be attributed to mere miscommunication, Mr. Azeem said the problem runs deeper.
“I think that it’s more than just miscommunication. I think there’s some lack of collaboration or cooperation between the two institutions. They need to work on that,” he concluded.
His remarks come after Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem Sai revealed that the OSP had yet to release the case docket needed to facilitate the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, despite several formal requests.
The OSP has, however, clarified that the delay is due to ongoing compilation of the docket following new evidence discovered during a June 10 search and seizure operation at the offices of Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML).
