The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been appointed as a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Task Force working toward a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine war.
The appointment, announced by the Parliamentary Service of Ghana in a statement dated October 30, 2025, places Speaker Bagbin among eight distinguished parliamentarians from across the world selected to spearhead parliamentary dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv.
According to the IPU President, Speaker Bagbin was chosen for his “integrity, impartiality, and ability to build trust with all parties.”
In a letter confirming the appointment, IPU Secretary-General Martin Chungong said the Speaker’s leadership and experience will strengthen the group’s peacebuilding efforts.
“We are confident that your leadership and experience will enhance the work and impact of the Task Force in its mission to support diplomatic efforts in seeking a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine,” he stated.
The IPU Task Force, established in March 2022, has become one of the few international platforms that maintain open dialogue between Russian and Ukrainian parliamentarians.
Since its creation, it has held thirteen meetings, including a joint mission to Kyiv and Moscow in 2022, as well as periodic consultations with both sides during IPU Assemblies.
Speaker Bagbin’s inclusion, the statement noted, brings renewed commitment to the Task Force’s goal of promoting peace through dialogue.
As part of his duties, he will attend in-person sessions, participate in hearings, and engage directly with leaders from both countries.
The Parliamentary Service described the appointment as a recognition of Ghana’s growing voice in global peace efforts and of Speaker Bagbin’s long-standing record in international mediation and parliamentary diplomacy.
