Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie faces parliamentary scrutiny today as the Appointments Committee vets him for the position of Chief Justice, despite opposition from the Minority, following his nomination by President John Dramani Mahama.
The hearing is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at Parliament House in Accra, confirmed by David Sebastian Damoah, Director of Media Relations at Parliament.
The vetting has generated debate, with the Minority urging a delay due to ongoing court cases involving former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin argued that proceeding could interfere with pending judicial matters.
Speaker Alban Bagbin, backed by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, dismissed the objections, stating there is no constitutional or procedural reason to halt the process and warning against setting a precedent that could stall parliamentary duties.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, seeking to become the substantive head of Ghana’s judiciary, will appear before MPs to discuss his qualifications, judicial approach, and vision for the justice system.
His nomination follows the removal of Justice Torkornoo, who held the Chief Justice role since 2023.
