Lawyer and NPP Legal Directorate member, Ross Owusu, has dismissed the Attorney-General’s argument that convicted NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, could be a flight risk if granted bail.
Speaking to Isaac Addae on The Verdict on Starr FM, Ross Owusu questioned why the Attorney-General was now raising concerns about Wontumi potentially fleeing the country.
”He stayed in Ghana and went through the trial process. So why is it that they are now raising this issue of him being a flight risk and all that?”
He described the flight-risk argument as the “weakest argument” the state could make against Wontumi’s release, arguing that Wontumi remained in Ghana and went through the trial process.
Mr. Owusu further alleged that the Attorney-General was relying on the flight-risk argument because the bail application had a strong chance of succeeding.
He expressed confidence that the court would grant Wontumi bail when the application is heard on August 19.
The lawyer, however, stressed that granting bail pending appeal would not mean Wontumi had been cleared of the case.
According to him, the bail application is intended to allow Wontumi to come out of custody and have greater access to his legal team while the appeal process continues.
He added that Wontumi would return to prison if the appeal is ultimately unsuccessful.
