Former Anyaa-Sowutuom MP, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has raised concerns over the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) recent decision to terminate the contracts of over 500 Internally Generated Fund (IGF) staff, describing the move as detrimental to efficiency and national development.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Isaac Addae on Friday, November 28, Dr. Kissi noted, “Most of us Ghanaians, when we travel, do so well…It’s just that the guidance, the system, the structures, our ability to make it happen, and mind you, in all fairness, we struggle to get the kind of financial support that others get on a twinkle of an eye.”
He expressed particular concern about the impact on institutional knowledge, emphasizing that experienced staff are critical to the smooth functioning of municipal operations,
“When you take it to the lower lower lower ranks, you lose those with what we call knowledge and history of the place. And you cannot function as a company.”
The terminations, which affect all IGF staff employed before May 2025, are part of the government’s plan to reorganize municipal operations. Staff are required to vacate their positions by January 1, 2026, hand over AMA property, and may reapply for re-engagement by January 15, 2026. Those employed from May 2025 onward are exempted.
Critics, including Dr. Adomako Kissi, argue that the decision risks undermining institutional capacity, describing it as “a promotion of job losses” rather than genuine job creation.
