The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council has begun the distribution of streetlights to all 29 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region as part of efforts to improve security and safety in communities.
Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, announced that each Metropolitan and Municipal Assembly will receive 150 streetlights, while each District Assembly will receive 100 streetlights.
She directed all assemblies to complete the installation and submit a brief report to the Regional Coordinating Council by the end of the week.
According to the Regional Minister, the initiative aligns with the vision of the President of the Republic of Ghana, who has consistently stressed the importance of safer and well-lit communities.
Addressing the media, Mrs. Ocloo expressed concern about the persistent vandalism of public infrastructure, particularly the theft of streetlight cables.
She described the practice as unacceptable, noting that installing streetlights is capital-intensive and places a significant financial burden on government.
“This is something we have said over and over again. Installing streetlights is very expensive, and we cannot continue to invest heavily only for individuals, driven by personal interest, to steal the cables,” she said.
She called on residents to take collective responsibility for protecting public property and urged them to report acts of vandalism to the authorities.
“We will not accept it. We should all be watchdogs and report such incidents so that the necessary action can be taken,” she added.
The distribution forms part of broader measures to enhance public safety, improve night-time visibility, and support crime prevention across the Greater Accra Region.
