Kekeli Adobea, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications team, has dismissed claims that American YouTuber IShowSpeed received a Ghanaian passport solely due to his celebrity status.
Speaking on GHToday with Lily Mohammed on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Adobea explained that passport issuance involves procedures completed well before the final document is issued.
“I don’t think the passport was created in 24 hours. Things were done before now, so the output is what we are getting,” she said.
She pointed to Ghanaian nationality laws, which recognise individuals with Ghanaian parentage regardless of where they were born.
Using a personal example, she said, “I have some nephews in the UK. Their father is a Ghanaian and their mother is white. They came this December, and we got them Ghana Cards because they are Ghanaians, even though they have British passports.”
Adobea suggested that the same legal principle could apply to IShowSpeed if his maternal Ghanaian heritage is verified. “If IShowSpeed’s mother is a Ghanaian, I’m sure maybe he had something to prove. He’s been able to prove that his mother is a Ghanaian, so he was given one,” she said.
She also rejected claims that state institutions would grant passports based on fame or public pressure, adding, “I am not sure the Ministry just gave him a passport because he is IShowSpeed or because of his name. Maybe they’ve done a background check and they are sure that he is a Ghanaian.”
