The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally notified Umar Sanda Mohammed that he has automatically forfeited his party membership after deciding to contest the upcoming Ayawaso East Constituency by-election as an independent candidate.
In a letter dated Tuesday, February 17, 2026, and signed by NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party stated that Mr. Sanda’s decision “is in direct contravention of the Party’s Constitution and the collective decision of the Party to field a duly and democratically elected candidate.”
“By virtue of your decision to break ranks with the Party and contest against the officially endorsed candidate of the NDC, you have, in accordance with the provisions of the Party’s Constitution, automatically forfeited your membership of the Party with immediate effect,” the letter further warned.
The NDC also prohibited Mr. Sanda from using any party property in his campaign.
“You are hereby formally notified that you are prohibited from using the Party’s name, logo, colors, insignia, symbols, or any other intellectual property or paraphernalia associated with the Party in the course of your campaign or any related political activity. Please be guided accordingly,” the General Secretary added.
The Ayawaso East by-election, scheduled for March 3, 2026, was triggered by the death of sitting Member of Parliament Mahama Naser Toure on January 4, 2026.
The Electoral Commission has cleared five candidates to contest the seat, including the NDC’s officially endorsed candidate Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, Mr. Umar Sanda as an independent, and candidates from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).
