The Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaibu, has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of betraying the religious community regarding the passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill (LGBTQ+ law).
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey on Thursday, April 23, 2026, the MP questioned the government’s sudden lack of urgency in signing the controversial bill into law, despite previous public displays of piety and commitment.
Shaibu reminded the public of the administration’s earlier stance, recalling moments where leaders sought spiritual backing for their legislative agenda.
“You made a promise. You went to kneel down, and the pastors that anointed you with oil prayed with you.
“You said to them that ‘I am going to ensure that the LGBTQ+ law is passed and I’m going to sign with ease,” Shaibu remarked.
The lawmaker pointed out a glaring inconsistency in the government’s legislative track record, noting that while the NDC has passed approximately 99% of laws under certificate of urgency since taking power, the LGBTQ+ law remains conspicuously stalled.
Shaibu further highlighted the recent arrest of Baba Amando, who simply posted a comment online asking, “when?” in reference to the bill’s signing.
“A misdemeanour offence, and he is remanded for two weeks? What is happening to state institutions? What is happening to such weaponization, and nobody is talking about it?” Shaibu questioned.
