A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Dr. Ezekiel Agyekum Obeng has rejected claims by government the fire outbreak at GRIDCo’s substation in Akosombo is the cause of the power crisis in the country.

Speaking on GHToday on GHOne TV on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, Dr. Agyekum Obeng argued that the government is failing to be truthful with citizens about the depth and duration of the energy challenges insisting that the outages began long before the fire outbreak.

“And let’s not kid ourselves. It didn’t start two weeks ago,” he stated, pointing to personal and anecdotal evidence of power instability dating back to the final quarter of 2025.

He noted that many neighbourhoods, including his own, experienced significant blackouts during the Christmas period—specifically around December 23rd or 26th—well before the current “unbearable” heights of the crisis.

According to him, the ‘reasonable’ Ghanaian public did not initially complain because they gave the government the benefit of the doubt.

This patience, Dr. Agyekum Obeng continued has reached a breaking point as the outages continue to curtail the sleep and productivity of citizens night after night.

“It didn’t just begin yesterday…but it has risen to unbearable height, hence the uproar by the Ghanaian society,” he said.

NPP is using the power outages to malign this NDC administration and paint them black… – Kwame Owusu Danso Esq. (Exec. Dir., Lands and Mines Watch)#GHOneNews #EIBNetwork #GHOneTV #NewsAlert pic.twitter.com/SY3uLk3z1S

The NPP communicator expressed frustration with the “litany of explanations” provided by energy officials and government spokespersons since the crisis intensified.

According to Dr. Agyekum Obeng, the shifting narratives have only served to confuse the public rather than offer a clear path toward restoration.

His comments come amid growing calls from civil society and energy experts for the government to release a formal load-shedding timetable to allow businesses and households to plan their daily activities.
