The management of Koforidua Technical University (KTU) has suspended all Students’ Representative Council (SRC) activities indefinitely following the arrest of 10 individuals over the alleged production and sale of cannabis-infused drinks and ice cream during this year’s SRC Week celebrations.
The decision was announced in a press release issued August 5 by the Head of Public Affairs of the University ,Macclean Lovelace -Dodoo after the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) arrested the suspects on Saturday, August 1, 2026.
According to the University, seven of the 10 persons arrested are confirmed students of KTU, while the remaining three are not students of the institution.
The statement explained that the suspects are currently in the custody of NACOC’s National Headquarters in Accra, where they are assisting with investigations.
KTU Management disclosed that it visited the affected students after making inquiries at various security agencies to establish which institution had carried out the arrests.
The University stressed that the arrests occurred during SRC Week celebrations and not Hall Week celebrations, as had been reported in some sections of the media.
Management strongly condemned the alleged production and sale of cannabis-infused drinks and ice cream, describing the reported conduct as unacceptable and contrary to the University’s code of conduct.
As an immediate preventive measure, KTU has imposed an indefinite ban on all SRC activities and constituted a committee to investigate the incident and recommend measures to prevent a recurrence.
“As a precautionary measure, all SRC activities have been banned until further notice, and a committee has been constituted to investigate the matter thoroughly and provide recommendation (s) to prevent any future occurrences,” a statement signed by Management read in part.
The University also reminded students that involvement in such misconduct constitutes an offence under Article 15 (vi) of the KTU Students’ Handbook.
Management said parents of the affected students have been contacted and urged parents of other students to remain calm, assuring them that the University is cooperating fully with NACOC and other relevant authorities.
While reaffirming its commitment to discipline, safety and institutional integrity, KTU emphasized that under Article 19 (2) (c) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, the affected students are presumed innocent until proven guilty or until they plead guilty before a competent court.
The University indicated that further action, including any disciplinary measures, will be announced after investigations have been concluded.
