Jomoro Municipal Assembly launches free primary healthcare programme to improve access

Initiative targets financial barriers and improves access to basic healthcare.

The Jomoro Municipal Assembly in the Western Region has launched a free primary healthcare programme aimed at improving access to quality and affordable healthcare for residents across the municipality.

The initiative, launched under the theme “Removing Financial Barrier Towards Achieving Universal Health Coverage,” is expected to help address financial constraints that prevent some residents, particularly those in underserved communities, from seeking timely medical attention.

The programme brings primary healthcare services closer to residents while promoting early detection and treatment of illnesses before they develop into more serious conditions.

Speaking at the launch, a member of the Western Regional Health Committee, Betty B. Sam, commended the Jomoro Municipal Assembly for introducing the initiative.

She said accessible primary healthcare was critical to ensuring that residents received early treatment and preventing minor health conditions from becoming severe.

Madam Sam urged residents to take advantage of the programme and make healthcare a priority, while encouraging health workers to provide quality and respectful services to beneficiaries.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Jomoro, Boadi Benedict, said the initiative formed part of the Assembly’s efforts to ensure that residents, regardless of their financial circumstances, could access basic healthcare services.

He assured that the Assembly would continue working with relevant stakeholders to strengthen the programme and ensure it achieves its intended purpose.

The MCE also urged residents to make proper use of the services and cooperate with health authorities to sustain the initiative.

The Jomoro Municipal Health Director, Gabriel Yengliereh, highlighted the importance of primary healthcare in disease prevention, early detection and treatment.

He said the programme would help bring essential healthcare services closer to residents and encourage them to seek medical attention before their conditions become severe.

Mr. Yengliereh called for collaboration between health workers and community members to ensure the success of the programme.

The event was chaired by former Jomoro District Chief Executive, Sylvester Daddie, who described the initiative as a significant milestone for the municipality.

He commended the Assembly and health authorities for prioritising the welfare of residents and urged traditional leaders, community members and other stakeholders to support the programme to ensure its sustainability.

The launch was attended by health officials, local government authorities, traditional and community leaders, and residents from communities across the municipality.

Member of Parliament for Jomoro and Deputy Transport Minister, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, was unable to attend the launch but was represented by her Personal Assistant, Godwin Alueke, and the Jomoro NDC Constituency Youth Organiser, Ernest Anaman.

The Assembly said the free primary healthcare programme is expected to improve access to healthcare, promote early treatment of diseases and contribute to better health outcomes, particularly for residents who face difficulties paying for basic medical services.
