NDC Communications Team Member, Mohammed Tauphick, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) of applying double standards in their reactions to remarks by the Chief Justice.
Speaking to Isaac Addae on Morning Starr on Starr FM, Mohammed Tauphick argued that the NPP’s reaction to the Chief Justice’s comments contrasts with its earlier support for his position on galamsey.
He said the NPP’s then Communication Director, Richard Ahiagbah, publicly supported the Chief Justice when he spoke about galamsey, but the party has now taken a different position because his latest comments do not favour it.
“If today, the Chief Justice is saying something because it’s not in your favor, then you are coming out to say that, why would the Chief Justice say that?”
Mr Tauphick said he would rather the NPP use the Chief Justice’s comments as an opportunity to reflect on its own conduct instead of demanding his resignation.
“If I’m a member of NPP, I wouldn’t criticize him. I will only go back and sit down and then check out and assess ourselves that where did we go wrong.”
He also criticised the NPP’s call for the Chief Justice to resign, describing the response as aggressive.
“You don’t aggressively tell a Chief Justice to resign because he said what does not favour you.”
Mohammed Tauphick further accused the Ghana Bar Association of selectively applying its standards, arguing that the association did not respond similarly to certain actions and statements under the previous administration.
“The hypocrisy, the double standard or the selective application of standard by the Ghana Bar Association should also be re-looked at.”
He cited comments attributed to former President Nana Akufo-Addo concerning a court case, arguing that the Ghana Bar Association did not issue a similar response.
“But the president came out and the Ghana Bar Association didn’t say anything.” He said.
“The same standards should apply regardless of which political party is in power”. He added.
