The Ministry of Education has invited the leadership of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to an urgent meeting today, Monday, October 12, 2026, to resolve the ongoing strike by university administrators.

The industrial action has disrupted preparations for the 2026/2027 academic year, forcing the University of Ghana to postpone its reopening, which was scheduled for Monday, October 12. The university has said a revised date will be announced in due course.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has also postponed its reopening, initially scheduled for October 13, citing the strike’s impact on its operations and administration.

In a statement dated Sunday, October 11, the Ministry said the meeting would focus on constructive dialogue towards finding an amicable solution to the industrial action.

“The Ministry has invited the leadership of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to an urgent meeting on Monday, October 12, 2026, to engage in constructive dialogue towards an amicable resolution of the ongoing strike action,” the statement said.

The Ministry said the government remained committed to addressing the concerns of organised labour through established negotiation mechanisms and constructive engagement.

It also urged all parties to approach the meeting in good faith, mindful of the impact of the strike on students, university communities and the broader national interest.

The Ministry further appealed to GAUA’s leadership to seize the opportunity to work with relevant stakeholders towards an early resolution of the impasse.

It expressed hope that the meeting would produce a positive outcome and allow affected tertiary institutions to resume normal academic and administrative activities.

“Government remains hopeful that the meeting will yield a positive outcome and facilitate a swift return to normal academic and administrative activities across affected tertiary institutions,” the statement added.
