Three days remain before the African Minerals Policy Forum – Mining in Motion 2026 opens in Accra, bringing together African leaders, policymakers, mining companies and investors to discuss the continent’s mineral development agenda.

The three-day forum, scheduled for October 19 to 21, 2026, will be held under the theme “One Continent. One Voice on Minerals. Aligning Africa’s Mineral Future.”

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and Liberian President Joseph Boakai are among the confirmed keynote speakers, alongside Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, African Union Commissioner for Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals Francisca Tatchouop Belobe, and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Secretary-General Mathias Cormann.

The forum will focus on regional policy coordination, mineral production, local beneficiation and the formalisation of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), with the broader objective of advancing the implementation of the African Mining Vision.

The vision seeks to promote mining-led industrialisation and economic growth by ensuring that Africa derives greater economic benefits from its mineral resources.

Ministerial discussions to shape Africa’s mineral future

Mining and natural resources ministers from Ghana, Nigeria, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Egypt, Malawi and South Sudan are expected to participate in ministerial roundtables and panel discussions.

The sessions will examine strategies to strengthen regional cooperation, secure Africa’s strategic mineral assets, establish competitive regional beneficiation corridors and improve the continent’s bargaining power in the global minerals market.

Discussions will also address the operationalisation of the African Minerals Development Centre and ways to expand domestic mineral processing to create more economic opportunities within African countries.

Industry and financing opportunities

The programme will feature high-level panels, keynote addresses, fireside chats and technical workshops bringing together governments, mining companies, industry associations and financial institutions.

Industry sessions will examine relations between governments and mining companies, trust between mining operators and host communities, regulatory certainty, taxation, local content and community development.

A dedicated discussion on financing Africa’s mineral sector will explore ways to mobilise capital for mineral industrialisation, strengthen regional value chains and expand financing for mining and downstream development.

Fireside chats with industry leaders will also examine trends in mining finance, mineral traceability and central bank gold purchase programmes.

Artisanal mining and local beneficiation

Technical sessions will focus on formalising artisanal and small-scale gold mining, strengthening partnerships between small-scale and large-scale operators, and promoting responsible mineral production.

Other discussions will explore the role of green minerals and regional value chains in inclusive and sustainable industrialisation, as well as the concept of an Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining Hub.

The organisers say the forum is expected to connect Africa’s mineral policy ambitions with practical approaches to investment, regional integration and value addition.
