President John Dramani Mahama on Monday, April 27, 2026, cut sod for the construction of a new concourse linking Terminals 2 and 3 at the Accra International Airport, marking the start of a major infrastructure expansion aimed at easing congestion, improving passenger flow, and strengthening Ghana’s aviation sector.
The ceremony was attended by Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe; Deputy Transport Minister Dorcas Affo-Toffey; Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and other senior government officials.
The strategic project is expected to significantly improve operational efficiency at Ghana’s premier aviation hub by enabling faster passenger connections, smoother transfers, and an enhanced travel experience.
President Mahama described the initiative as more than a ceremonial undertaking, emphasizing that it represents a strategic investment in efficiency, passenger satisfaction, and the country’s long-term economic future.

He noted that passenger traffic at the airport has increased from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025, underscoring Ghana’s growing international connectivity and appeal as a destination.
However, the President acknowledged that rising passenger volumes have intensified pressure on airport operations, particularly during peak periods, making urgent infrastructure interventions necessary.
The project forms part of the government’s broader commitment, through the Ministry of Transport, to modernize national infrastructure, improve service delivery, and position Ghana as a leading aviation hub in West Africa.
