The Black Princesses of Ghana clinched the top spot in the Women’s football tournament at the ongoing 13th African Games in Cape Coast with a 1-0 win over Ethiopia amidst the on-and-off lights out.
Ghana struggled to assert dominance in the game, but the host nation gradually matched Ethiopia’s energy as the match progressed, both teams failed to break the deadlock in the first half, leaving the score goalless at the interval.
The victory was, however, marred by the stadium, experiencing total blackout (Dumsor) twice within fifteen minutes, disrupting the game.
The lights first went off in the 35th minute of the game but were restored ten minutes later, but then went off again on the stroke of half-time.
The referee had no option but to end the first half without playing the extra minutes.
The lights were restored before the commencement of the second half.
The Black Princesses stepped up in the second half, with Comfort Owusu scoring the game’s only goal in the 59th minute.
The match took a dramatic turn in the 78th minute when Abiba Issah was given a second yellow card, reducing the team to ten players.
Despite a numerical disadvantage, the Black Princesses pushed for a second goal, with Mukarama’s close in the 84th minute, but her effort was saved by the woodwork.
This victory puts Ghana on top of their group with three points, and they aim to build on their positive start against their next opponents in the coming days.
