The long age water crises that has bedeviled residents of Wlitey-Sakpakukope, a community in the Akatsi South Municipality is now a thing of the past.

The woes of years of lack of portable water have been brought to an end following the handing over of a mechanized borehole to the community by a non-profit organization, BKQ Foundation -marking a new dawn for residents.

At a short handing over ceremony on Sunday, 31st December, 2023, the Volta Regional Secretary of the NDC, James Gunu who led the NGO into the community, indicated that the project would bring to an end the suffering of residents who for many years had to walk several kilometers to draw water from unwholesome sources especially in the dry season.

He commended the BKQ Foundation for responding swiftly to his appeal in ending the water crisis in the community.

He said, “I must commend the BKQ Foundation immensely for taking up the challenge to fund this great project for our community. It did not take them more than two months to intervene for us.”

Mr. Gunu admonished residents to ensure proper usage of the water supply system and regular maintenance to prevent preventable damages.

A representative of the BKQ Foundation, Mr Quarshie Kudzo said their organization is committed to addressing issues related to water and sanitation, access to quality education, health and social development across the country with focus on rural deprived communities.

He revealed that the project at Wlitey-Sakpakukope is the fifth they have funded in the Volta region alone.

Chief of the community, Torgbui Sakpaku IX, expressed excitement about the initiative and thanked the donors and Mr Gunu for their efforts.

He cautioned residents against activities that could lead to a breakdown in the water supply system but was quick to appeal to the BKQ Foundation to consider undertaking similar initiative in other communities within the jurisdiction.
