The former Board Chair of the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) Professor Christopher Ameyaw Akumfi has said that he countersigned a letter for the disbursement of the US$2 million for the Skytrain project but the outbreak of COVID-19 scuttled the implementation of the project.
This was contained in his Witness Statement filed at the High Court Accra, on the 23rd of September 2026 as part of his defence in his ongoing trial in which he and the Former CEO of the Fund, Solomon Asamoah, are facing charges of causing financial loss to the state.
“I was presented with a letter dated 25th February 2019 instructing GIIF’s bankers to transfer US$2,000,000.00 to Africa Investor Holdings Limited as poyment for GlIF’s equity shares. The transfer instruction was presented to me in my official capacity as Board Chairman because transactions above the applicable threshold required the signatures of the Chairman and the Chief Executive Officer. I therefore countersigned the instruction together with the 1″ Accused person” the Statement said.
The filing of the defence Witness Statement comes after the failure of the accused persons to halt their trial following the dismissal of their submission of no case.
On 2nd July 2026, the High Court dismissed of a submission of no case brought by the accused person after the Prosecution had closed it case. Following this Ruling, the accused persons mounted actions in the Supreme Court intended to terminate their trial. An application for an order of certiorari was sought to quash the decision of the High Court and this was subsequently followed by an action to injunct the trial pending the determination of the certiorari application. However, the Supreme Court dismissed both actions paving the way for the proceedings to continue.
At the resumption of proceedings on Monday, October 19 the Court began case management conference for the witness statement filed by the defence for both the Prosecution and defence Lawyers to align on the necessary details for the commencement of the accused person’s defence.
The case management conference continues on Tuesday October 20 to Thursday October 22 after which the accused person will begin calling their witnesses.
