The Ghana Medical Association has confirmed overcrowding at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital Accident and Emergency Centre, following a viral video showing patients seated on chairs and the floor.
The association, in a statement criticized attempts by hospital management to dismiss the incident as AI-generated, stating, “checks at the Korle-Bu Accident and Emergency department and a subsequent eyewitness account… confirmed that the incident did actually occur.”
GMA noted that overcrowding occurs in many facilities during patient surges and warned that recent administrative directives may have contributed to the situation.
“The video… exposes the danger of issuing directives without a comprehensive assessment of the situation, which… results in unintended significant risk to the quality of care and patient safety,” the statement added.
To address the crisis, GMA proposed digitized bed tracking, surge plans, better coordination with other hospitals, back-referral systems, and increased capacity at district and regional facilities.
“The GMA stands ready to work with the Ministry and all stakeholders to find real and lasting solutions… to ensure timely, appropriate and safe care at all levels in emergencies,” the statement concluded.
