The Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), operators of the Ayalolo bus service, has reported strong early results from its new contraflow arrangement on major routes into Accra’s Central Business District, with journey times slashed from hours to under an hour on the first day of operation.
Speaking during monitoring of the initiative’s launch, Public Relations Officer (PRO), Justice Kwaku Safo described the morning’s performance as “wonderful.”
Ayalolo buses ran services on the Adenta–Accra corridor, the Pokuase–Amasaman–Accra route, and the Kasoa–Accra stretch.
On the Adenta–Accra route, a journey that normally takes two to three hours was completed in 23 to 25 minutes. The return trip also took 23 minutes. On the Kasoa corridor, travel time dropped from the usual two to three hours to 50 minutes.
According to Safo, passengers were so impressed that they applauded when the bus reached Weija Junction.
“We have a focus. We want to decongest the city and we want to make public transport affordable and accessible,” Safo said.
“If you are assured that you board an Ayalolo bus and you will not spend the entire time in traffic, we are encouraged that it will benefit the company and the commuters. It’s a win-win for all of us.”
Managing Director, Awudu Dauda Esq affirmed that the contraflow project is permanent.
“Ayalolo contraflow has come to stay; it’s not going anywhere,” he stated.
He stressed that safety remains the top priority, with the team identifying problem spots and returning to the boardroom to address them.
Dauda confirmed that the same corridors would operate again between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., with sufficient buses available.
He expects evening performance to match the morning’s results: approximately 23–25 minutes to Adenta, 50 minutes to Kasoa, and 35 minutes to Amasaman.
GAPTE management has assured the public that adequate safety measures are in place to support smooth and efficient operations and is urging commuters to use Ayalolo services to help ease congestion in the capital.
