Ghanaian sprinters, Benjamin Azamati and Abdul Rasheed Saminu, have publicly criticised the Ministry of Sports and the Ghana Athletics Association over what they describe as inadequate and unfair travel arrangements for the national 4×100m relay team.

The athletes took to social media platform X to express their frustration shortly after helping Ghana secure qualification for the World Athletics Championships. The team finished second in their heat on Day 2 of the World Athletics Relays, booking their place at the global event set to be held in China.

Azamati and Saminu highlighted delays in ticket purchases and what they termed poor travel planning, drawing comparisons with the level of support often given to Ghana’s senior national football team, the Ghana national football team.

They called on both the Ministry and the athletics governing body to invest more effort and resources into track and field, insisting that the relay team deserves the same level of attention and professionalism as other sporting disciplines.

The quartet of Joseph Paul Amoah, Azamati, Saminu, and Edwin Gadayi sealed qualification with a time of 38.09 seconds, underlining their growing status as one of Africa’s top sprint relay teams.

Following their qualification success, the team is expected to turn its focus to the upcoming CAA African Senior Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place in Accra from May 12 to 17.
