Ghana’s Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Ghana Athletics Association have responded to concerns raised by members of the national relay team over travel arrangements, following public criticism from athletes.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Ministry explained that arrival timelines and travel preparation schedules for athletes are guided primarily by federation engagement and international competition protocols, rather than direct decisions by the Ministry itself. It added that its role in the process was based on travel plans submitted by the Ghana Athletics Association.
The clarification comes after backlash from Ghanaian sprinters, including Benjamin Azamati and Abdul Rasheed Saminu, who criticised what they described as poor and delayed travel arrangements during the recent World Athletics Relays.
Meanwhile, the President of the Ghana Athletics Association, Bawa Fuseini, issued a separate statement acknowledging the concerns raised by the athletes. He noted that the Association takes full responsibility for the situation.
Mr Fuseini further assured the athletes and the public that the GAA is working closely with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to address the issues and implement measures to prevent a recurrence in future competitions.
The response from both bodies comes amid growing calls for improved support systems for Ghana’s athletics teams, particularly following their recent qualification for the World Athletics Championships.
