The campaign team of former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed strong confidence in securing an emphatic victory in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer election scheduled for January 31, 2026.

According to the Communications Aide to Team Bawumia, Awal Mohammed, the former Vice President is poised to win by “not less than 75 per cent” of the votes.

Speaking on The Verdict with Isaac Addae on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, Mohammed described Dr Bawumia as the most formidable and well-prepared candidate for the 2028 general election, stressing his popularity, experience, and integrity.

“Team Bawumia are focused on an issue-based campaign, and we believe he is the most marketed and most formidable candidate going into the 2028 elections,” he said.

He added: “Dr Bawumia is the most popular candidate in the country; he is the most prepared. In terms of governance, he has the experience and is ready to ascend the high office as President of Ghana.”

In a sharp response to a rival contender, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Mohammed dismissed claims that Acheampong significantly financed the party ahead of the 2024 elections.

“Dr Bryan Acheampong lost the Suhum seat in 2012 due to financial constraints, hence he should not claim he financed the party prior to the 2024 election,” he asserted.

Addressing reports of tension over endorsements, the aide maintained that their camp respects the constitutional rights of party members, including MPs supporting other candidates.

“No single person in Bawumia’s camp has issues with anyone who has endorsed any of the flagbearer hopefuls,” he noted. “Team Bawumia have never issued a statement on the two MPs who endorsed Bryan Acheampong; it is within their constitutional right.”

He accused Acheampong of showing intolerance by criticising MPs who have openly backed Dr Bawumia. “Bryan Acheampong berated the 15 MPs in the Eastern Region who have endorsed Dr Bawumia,” Mohammed said.

Defending the former Vice President’s integrity, Mohammed insisted that Dr Bawumia is not tainted by corruption. “Dr Bawumia is not corrupt, and there is no single scandal against him,” he stressed.

On concerns about the Vice President’s role in economic management, he argued that the Constitution does not automatically assign the position of head of the Economic Management Team to the Vice President.

“The office of the Vice President is limited in Ghana,” he explained, citing former President John Kufuor’s administration, where then-Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama was not head of the Economic Management Team.

Mohammed further rejected claims that Dr Bawumia should be blamed for the loss of sitting MPs in the 2024 election, stating: “Dr Bawumia cannot be blamed for any MP’s defeat in the 2024 election.”

He emphasised that the campaign remains focused and on course, with Dr Bawumia actively touring all 16 regions to engage delegates, including current and former executives of the party.

“The Dr Bawumia campaign team are focused, and we are confident of securing a landslide victory of not less than 75 per cent come 31 January,” he declared.
