‘Corrupt’ GFA officials ‘beam with laughter’ as Police storm secretariat

There is heavy Police presence at the Secretariat of the troubled Ghana Football Association in Accra as officials of the outfit hold a meeting over the scandals that have rocked them.

Starr News’ Dennis Mirpuri who is currently at the FA premises reports that the officials who were captured taking bribes in the Anas video are beaming with smiles as they file in for the meeting.

“There is police presence here at the GFA and they are here to protect the executive council who would having their meeting today. I have seen a couple of people who were implicated in the video, they are really beaming with smiles and do not look troubled at all,” Mirpuri reported on the Morning Starr.

Meanwhile, former deputy Attorney General Dominic Ayine has expressed concerns over the approach by government to dissolve the Ghana Football Association in the wake of the scandal that has rocked the association.

In the view of the Bolgatanga East MP, the law does not grant the president the powers to move for the dissolution of the football association.

A government statement Thursday announced that steps are being taking to strike out the current FA after investigations by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas revealed in a secret filming many key football officials accepting bribe to compromise their judgment on games in their care.

“The President can dissolve the GFA but it must be done legally right. Government is riding on the wave of public anger and I wonder if that will yield any results. The GFA will fight back if things are not done legally right. The GFA has a stronger case than the government because the government cannot just dissolve the Association. Ghana cannot set up the GFA and run it. When the association is dissolved, it will cost the government as the association may fight back,” he said.

But reacting to the concerns, a deputy Information Minister Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah said government has explored the various options available to it in the matter and opted for the best approach.

“Government has taken a decision to dissolve the GFA. The decision has been taken and we are yet to execute. The law states that when a company exists and a number of infractions occur, the company can be dissolved. As the decision has been taken, it is important to inform the nation and that is why the information is out there. The Sports Ministry has been charged to engage FIFA and CAF,” Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah told Morning Starr.
