The National of Chiefs has described the measures taken so far by President Akufo-Addo and his administration to mitigate the impact and spread of Covid-19 in Ghana as bold and commendable.
The eminent body made the assertion when its President, Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State and President of Asogli Traditional Area, addressed the President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House at a meeting called on the behest of the President to solicit the thoughts on the House of Chiefs on the way forward in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Mr. President, on behalf of my colleagues, I congratulate you for all the bold decisions that have produced this low infection rate. The ban on public gatherings, closure of our borders, directives on social distancing, and the recent lockdown of parts of the country are very commendable bold decisions” Togbe Afede XIV said.
President Akufo Addo
President Akufo-Addo in his response to the observations of the National House of Chiefs registered his appreciation for the commendations of the Chiefs on decisions he has taken as President to protect the lives of the people of Ghana. The President noted that he is looking forward to hearing the perspectives of the house of Chiefs on the way forward to reviving the economy and jump-starting the entire country after the shocks of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The National House of Chiefs
The National House of Chiefs was established in 1969 under Article 154 of the 1969 Constitution. The Instrument covering the establishment of the House was enacted on the 17th September, 1971, that is the Chieftaincy Act 1971 (Act 370). The 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and Chieftaincy Act 2008, Act 759 maintained the House. The House perform research, judicial, administrative, financial and advisory functions to all Chiefs in Ghana through the Regional Houses of Chiefs.
