The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced plans to replace a batch of defective 2026 vehicle number plates after routine checks revealed quality concerns.
According to the Authority, some of the embossed plates issued for 2026 did not meet required durability standards, resulting in fading characters.
The DVLA, in a statement on Monday, April 27, noted that the issue was identified during internal quality assurance processes, prompting immediate action.
“Routine quality checks revealed that some plates did not meet the Authority’s durability standards, causing the printed characters to fade,” the statement said.
The affected batch has since been withdrawn from circulation, although the Authority acknowledged that a number of the plates had already been issued to vehicle owners.
As part of remedial measures, the DVLA is offering free replacements to all affected customers nationwide.
“All affected vehicle owners are invited to visit any DVLA office nationwide for a free replacement,” the statement added.
The Authority apologised for the inconvenience caused and accepted responsibility for the lapse.
“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and take full responsibility for the oversight,” it stated.
The DVLA further indicated that it is tightening its quality control systems to prevent a recurrence and ensure higher standards in its services.
