The Ministry of Health has called for calm amongst the public amidst heightened vigilance as the World Health Organization (WHO) declares the Ebola outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.
The Ministry in a statement signed by the Health Minister, Kwabena Minta-Akandoh called for collective responsibility in safeguarding public health.
“The Ministry of Health wishes to inform the public that the recent outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the World Health Organisation due to the potential risk of cross-border transmission and the serious nature of the disease,” the Ministry stated.
Ebola is a severe and often fatal illness caused by the Ebola virus. It spreads through direct contact with blood, body fluids, secretions, or organs of infected persons, or with
contaminated surfaces and materials.
Although no cases have been reported in Ghana or the West African sub-region, authorities have urged the public to remain calm, but vigilant and strictly adhere to preventive health measures.
“The Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service, in collaboration with national and
international partners, have intensified surveillance, screening, preparedness, and response measures to protect public health. These measures will be updated as the situation evolves. The cooperation of every citizen is essential in preventing the spread of Ebola. Together, we can protect our families and communities,” the Ministry said in a statement.
The Ministry further advised individuals to carry personal hand sanitizers and observe universal precautions in all public settings.
