Theresa Lardi Awuni, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikwei North, has expressed strong confidence in her chances of retaining her parliamentary seat in the ongoing elections. Speaking at her polling station earlier today, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate highlighted the overwhelming support she has received from her constituents, dismissing suggestions that the seat could revert to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In an interview, Awuni emphasized her connection to the people of Okaikwei North, saying, “it’s a good feeling. This morning, I am positive, very positive that I’m retaining this seat with a very wide margin and bringing His Excellency [John Mahama] to power.”

The Okaikwei North seat, historically a stronghold of the NPP, saw a major upset when Awuni clinched victory in the last election. This time, she faces another female challenger from the NPP, but she remains unfazed by the competition. Awuni believes her track record and strong grassroots connections will ensure her re-election.

“This place was virtually known as an NPP stronghold, and I broke the ice,” she stated confidently. “Now I’m against another woman, and there’s this perception that it might not go back to the NPP. But I don’t see how that happens or what informed that analysis.”

Awuni further criticized her opponent, alleging a disconnect between the NPP candidate and the needs of the constituency. She said, “All I can tell you is that I’m from Okaikwei North, not from the other women. It’s a sitting member who has abandoned her constituents, and she’s here. My people are not ready to take that risk. My people are not ready to gamble with what they have.”

She also reflected on her long-standing ties to the area, emphasizing her local roots and consistent voter participation. “This is my polling station. I started voting when I turned 18, and I’ve voted here until today. I am positive that the campaign office can feel we are no longer turning blue. You can make my voice heard.”

As voting progresses, Awuni remains hopeful, anticipating a resounding victory by the end of the day. She concluded, “By the close of day today, the story will be different.”

The outcome of the Okaikwei North race is being closely watched as a key indicator of the political dynamics in Ghana, with Awuni’s confidence setting the tone for what could be a historic victory.
