GES seeks financial clearance extension to settle newly posted teachers

Over 2,000 newly recruited teachers affected by expired financial clearance, GES responds.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that it is actively working to tackle the issues of salary delays and documentation problems that newly posted teachers recruited in 2024 are facing.

In a statement released on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, and signed by Public Relations Officer Daniel Fenyi, GES acknowledged the issues and assured that efforts are underway to resolve them.

The GES reported that 12,807 graduates from the Colleges of Education were recruited in 2024, with 9,950 of them receiving Staff Identification Numbers (Staff IDs) and their corresponding salaries by December of that same year.

However, 2,113 teachers who were issued Staff IDs were not paid because the financial clearance expired at the end of 2024.

Additionally, 582 teachers did not obtain their Staff IDs due to issues with their documentation, which included mismatches in SSNIT numbers, Ghana Card details, and some cases of self-reposting.

A portion of the statement noted, “The Management of Ghana Education Service (GES) acknowledges receipt of petition presented by a section of newly posted teachers on Monday, June 23, 2025. These teachers, who assumed duty in September 2024, have expressed concerns primarily regarding delays in the issuance of Staff IDs and non-payment of salaries. Management wishes to acknowledge these concerns and further clarify the actions taken to address the issues.”

GES has, therefore, officially sent letters through the Minister for Education to the Ministry of Finance, requesting an extension of the expired financial clearance to facilitate salary processing.

According to GES, fortunately, the 2025 National Budget has allocated funds to cover the affected teachers.

GES also added that a technical committee has been formed, including representatives from the affected teachers, to coordinate actions among all parties involved.

Despite the challenges faced by the affected teachers, GES reassured everyone that they are making significant strides and are determined to address the unresolved issues.

“The present GES Management, upon assuming office, immediately undertook a nationwide staff validation exercise from 7th-14th March 2025 to confirm genuinely recruited teachers and clean up recruitment anomalies. This followed revelations of irregularities as captured in recent audit reports. A technical committee, including representatives of the aggrieved teachers, has been set up to ensure prompt communication, feedback and coordination. Letters have been sent through the Minister for Education to the Ministry of Finance requesting an extension of the expired financial clearance to allow for payment processing. Fortunately, a budgetary allocation was made in the 2025 budget statement.”

The management reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and collaboration, ensuring that no legitimately recruited teacher will be neglected.

GES urged the teachers to exercise patience and cooperation while reaffirming its dedication to enhancing the welfare of teachers and strengthening the education sector in Ghana.

This follows a picket by the affected teachers on Monday, June 23, 2025. The affected teachers, many of whom started work as early as September 2024, have not received their salaries due to various administrative challenges.
