The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has dismissed claims that Ghana profited from agreements with the United States on the deportation of some West African citizens. He stressed that the government has never received financial benefits from such arrangements and has no intention of doing so.
Addressing the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, September 15, Mr. Ablakwa explained that deportation cases have been managed in line with international law and Ghana’s responsibility to protect the dignity of its citizens, not as a financial opportunity.
“Let me state unequivocally that Ghana has not made and will not make financial gains from any deportation agreement with the United States. Our focus has always been the welfare, dignity, and fair treatment of our citizens,” the Minister emphasized.
Mr. Ablakwa pointed out that his ministry has engaged US authorities to ensure that deportations are carried out fairly and humanely. He added that the government continues to insist that due process and the rights of deportees are respected at every stage.
“No Ghanaian will be abandoned, even in deportation. We work to ensure that their rights are respected, and that they are able to return home in conditions that protect their dignity,” he stated.
He further explained that the Foreign Affairs Ministry does not negotiate deportations on the basis of monetary benefit but rather through the lens of citizen protection.
Mr. Ablakwa said the Mahama administration has insisted on a foreign policy that is transparent and people-centered, particularly on sensitive issues like deportations.
“Our foreign policy is not for sale. It must always serve the people and protect their dignity. That is the Reset agenda, and that is what guides us in every engagement,” he declared.
The Minister also warned against misinformation, stressing that such claims could undermine public confidence in Ghana’s diplomacy.
Mr. Ablakwa used the platform to highlight broader efforts by his ministry to safeguard Ghanaians living overseas, including the establishment of student help desks in missions with large Ghanaian populations and rapid interventions during crises abroad.
He said these measures underline the government’s determination to prioritize people over profits.
“The Mahama administration will not sacrifice the welfare of its citizens on the altar of misinformation or profiteering. We are determined to ensure that wherever Ghanaians find themselves in the world, their government stands with them,” Mr. Ablakwa affirmed .
