A political analyst at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Jonathan Asante-Otchere has found that the Central Region usually votes for the political party that introduces impactful policies to alleviate poverty.
Speaking on the dynamics that influence its voting pattern, the political analyst pointed out that the region rewarded governments that made immense social interventions in the lives of the people and punished politicians who are perceived to have done little to address poverty.
“They are multifaceted. You cannot really pinpoint or place a finger on one. But the point is that if you take out those regions, if you count the middle and the central, as well as the southern part of the country, the Central Region is of the poverty-induced level in terms of the highest poverty level.
“And so what that means is that you find yourself in an area where if government interventions and policies tend to reduce poverty, then obviously they will side with you. But if it does not, then they will turn their backs against you. That is how I see it,” he told Joshua Kodjo Mensah on Starr Today.
The Central Region is one of the two regions in the country that has always voted for the winning candidate since the inception of the 4th Republic.
It has been tipped as a battleground region which can break for either of the two major political parties.
