Jinapor laments over 2,500 ECG containers stuck at the Port

Energy Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor has expressed disappointment over some 2500 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) stuck at the Tema Port in Accra.

Speaking during the inauguration of a seven-member committee to explore privatization options for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), John Jinapor revealed the 2500 containers containing electrical materials have so far accrued a demurrage of 1.5 billion cedis.

He described the situation as unfortunate.

Mr. John Jinapor also revealed that the Ministry will investigate some procurements made by the ECG.

Cautioning members of the committee, the Minister charged the members to adopt a non-partisan approach to their work, emphasizing the importance of neutrality and expertise in the composition of the committee.

The move is part of efforts to revitalise the struggling state-owned entity.

You will recall during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, January 13, 2025, John Jinapor explained that the committee’s primary task would be to examine and propose viable models for private-sector involvement that could enhance ECG’s financial and operational sustainability.

The move comes in response to longstanding challenges faced by ECG, including inefficiencies, financial losses, and growing debt, which have hindered its ability to consistently deliver reliable electricity to Ghanaians.

However, the Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) has kicked against proposed privatisation of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

The Union also called for a collective effort to find a solution to the problems facing ECG, rather than immediately pushing for privatization.

But Speaking during the inauguration, the Energy Minister who doubles as MP for Yapei-Kusawgu, called on the officials of the Ministry to cooperate with the members of the committee for smooth work.

The members of the committee include Jabesh Amissah-Arthur, Ben Boakye (ACEP) Dr. Sharfic Sulleyman, an academic, Dr Simon Arkorli (PURC) Mr. Baden (ECG), Emma Ekua Bolley (Lawyer) and Mr Edward Abrokwah (Finance expert, risk analyst).

The committee is expected to prioritize local content in it one month work.
