Kwame Gyan builds 1000-seater Community Center for Akrofufu

A renowned senior law lecturer at the University of Ghana Law School, Lawyer Kwame Gyan, has handed over a monumental Community Center with a seating capacity of over 1000 to Akrofufu, his birthplace in the Atewa West Municipality of the Eastern region.

The facility which is the first of its kind in the Atewa West Municipality is expected to be used to host sanctioned activities involving large gatherings.

Commissioning the edifice, Lawyer Gyan said he decided to give back to his ancestral home for contributing to his success. He also believes it will be a motivation to the youth that regardless of their geographical disadvantage and economic inequalities, perseverance and commitment in pursuing higher education will elevate them to higher social status out of the quagmire of poverty.

He, therefore, urged the youth to desist from illegal mining and focus on their education. He further advised parents to stop selling their cocoa farms to invest in their children’s education to reap long term benefit worth more than the paltry amounts they will get out of the sale of their cocoa farms.

“Students present here must take lessons from what is happening today that because of Education an individual has been able to build this facility for the entire community. So I encourage you to take your education seriously and desist from engaging in galamsey. Illegal mining will not help you. The last time I spoke here at a durbar some people accused me of insulting them for blatantly saying my cocoa farm is my academic knowledge.

“Imagine we have about 20 persons of my caliber from this community, the entire Akrofufu Community would have been more developed with good infrastructure.  So, I entreat parents here to invest in your children’s education,” he said.

Lawyer Gyan breaks down in tears

The Akrofufu traditional Council having named the Community Center after the late mother of Lawyer Gyan, Comfort Buntaa, presented a citation to him for his unparalleled contribution to the development of the Community.

The family of the legal luminary also presented citation acknowledging his love for humanity and the family. These citations triggered tears down the chin of Lawyer Gyan, who explained that despite the sacrifices of his late mother in supporting his education, she died when he was pursuing higher education abroad, without living to reap from her sweat.

He was, however, excited the monument has been named in her memory.

Chief of Akrofufu Chief & MCE

Osabarima Adugyei Gyamfi I, Chief of Akyem-Akrofufu in his speech commended the law lecturer for his continuous support to the community.

He said the Traditional Council had planned to solicit for funds to build a 400 seating capacity Community Center but Lawyer Gyan decided to build the bigger facility within a short period of about five months.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Atewa West, Isaac Akomaning Asamoah stated that the construction of the Facility is to supplement government’s vision to provide Social Center in every district to provide a convenient environment for all large gatherings hence commended Lawyer Gyan for the foresight which he says is a relief to the Assembly.
